Earthquakes in Pattaya: How Likely Are They?
10 June 2025By Shaneruddle
When tremors from a powerful earthquake in Myanmar were recently felt across Thailand, including parts of Pattaya, it raised an important question—how likely is an earthquake in Pattaya, really? For those living here or considering buying property, understanding the actual risk is key to feeling secure and making informed decisions.
In this blog, we’ll break down what the science says, what history tells us, and what you actually need to know as a resident, investor, or visitor in Pattaya.
A Calm City on Shaky Ground?
Let’s start with the basics: Pattaya is not located on or near a major tectonic plate boundary. This makes it far less prone to earthquakes than places like Japan, Indonesia, or even Northern Thailand. That said, Thailand as a whole isn’t completely earthquake-free. There are several active fault lines in the north and west of the country, and while they don’t directly affect Pattaya, powerful quakes from those regions (or nearby countries like Myanmar) can still be felt. So, while Pattaya sits in what’s considered a “low to moderate” seismic risk zone, it’s not entirely off the radar.Have There Been Earthquakes in Pattaya Before?
Yes—but they’ve been minor, and none have caused damage locally. In 2006, there was a small cluster of earthquakes near the Gulf of Thailand, with one magnitude 5.0 quake located about 150 kilometers south of Pattaya. More recently, in March 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Myanmar caused tremors to be felt as far as Bangkok and Pattaya. It made the news—but not because of local destruction. These are the types of earthquakes that shake buildings slightly, send ripples through rooftop pools, and spark temporary evacuations—not events that lead to collapse or chaos. What Happens When a Quake Hits Nearby
During the 2025 Myanmar quake, people in high-rises across Pattaya reported feeling mild to moderate swaying. Some hotels and hospitals temporarily evacuated as a safety measure. There were even rumors of building damage, but the Mayor of Pattaya later confirmed that no structures were harmed. It was a reminder that Pattaya can feel the effects of regional seismic activity, but it’s also proof that the city is built to withstand these relatively small incidents. Are Pattaya Buildings Earthquake-Resistant?
Following several regional quakes in the early 2000s, Thailand updated its building codes to include earthquake-resistant standards, especially for high-rises. These rules are more strictly enforced in larger cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai, but Pattaya’s newer developments typically follow the same guidelines. When the Myanmar quake struck, Thai officials inspected over 3,000 buildings across the country. While several in Bangkok were found to have minor damage, none of the buildings inspected in Pattaya were flagged as unsafe. That said, if you’re buying or renting property, it’s always worth checking the age and structural integrity of the building—especially for high-rise condos.Should You Be Worried?
The short answer? No. The long answer? Be aware, but not alarmed. Here’s what we recommend:- Know basic earthquake safety: “Drop, Cover, Hold” still applies.
- Avoid panic—especially during minor tremors.
- If you’re in a high-rise, familiarize yourself with the emergency exits and evacuation plans.
- Consider property insurance that includes natural disasters if you’re buying long-term.
