Landing Smoothly in Pattaya: Traveller-Tested Tips for Your First Hour

4 December 2025By Shaneruddle

Introduction
Landing in Thailand’s busiest beach city is always a bit of a rush – the heat hits you, your phone’s not working properly yet, and there are people trying to get your attention before you’ve even left the airport. But those first 60 minutes after you arrive in Pattaya can either make your trip go smoothly or set you up for a few early headaches. I’ve put together a practical list of real tips that will help you avoid common mistakes and settle in quickly.

1. Exchange Just Enough Cash at the Airport

Don’t change all your money at Suvarnabhumi. The rates are much worse than what you’ll get in town. Just swap enough for your taxi or ride to Pattaya – around 1,000 to 1,500 THB is fine. Once you’re here, look for SuperRich or TT Exchange for better rates.

If you're planning to transfer money from overseas to buy property, timing and rates matter even more.

2. Download Grab or Bolt Before You Fly

If you haven’t already, get Grab or Bolt on your phone before you leave home. They’re the easiest way to get a ride without being overcharged. Set up your account and add your payment card in advance. If you do take a taxi, ask them to use the meter. A metered ride will usually cost half what you’ll be quoted otherwise.

3. Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP)

Even if you’ve driven in Thailand before, rules can change and the police do check. If you’re planning to rent a scooter or car, make sure you’ve got an IDP. It doesn’t cost much and can save you a fine or worse.

4. Stay Near the Action – But Don’t Get Stuck There

It’s tempting to base yourself on Beach Road and never leave, but you’ll get more value if you explore. Book somewhere central for convenience, but make a point of checking out places like Thepprasit Night Market for great food and better prices.

5. Use a Cross-Body Bag for Your Valuables

Pattaya nightlife can be busy and distracting – which makes it easy for pickpockets. A small zip-up cross-body bag is a good way to keep your phone, passport and cash safe and within reach.

6. Handle Jet Lag Your Way

Everyone has their own method. Some go out on night one and sleep till noon. Others take it slow with a quiet walk and early night. The best advice is simple: don’t overdo it, drink plenty of water, and don’t plan anything serious the next morning.

7. Watch the Roads – Even When Walking

Traffic here doesn’t work like back home. Cars might not stop at zebra crossings, and bikes come from all directions. Cross at lights when you can and keep your head on a swivel. If you’re riding a scooter, wear a helmet – they do stop tourists, and you can be fined.

8. Give Yourself a Budget for Nights Out

It’s easy to spend more than you plan on a night out. A lot of people I know take out a set amount of cash in the evening and leave the cards in the hotel safe. That way you don’t overspend – and you dodge extra ATM charges too.

9. Dress Properly at Temples

This one gets overlooked a lot. If you’re planning to visit a temple, wear something respectful – that means covering shoulders and knees. Take your shoes off at the entrance and give a polite wai (hands together, slight bow). Locals appreciate it.

10. Drink Water – Lots of It

The heat and humidity will catch you out, even if you’ve been to Thailand before. Always carry a refillable water bottle. You can fill up at 7‑Eleven and add an electrolyte sachet if you’re out during the hottest part of the day.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re here for the beaches, the nightlife, or just a bit of sun, getting your first hour right makes a big difference. These tips come from real experience – mine and others I know. Follow them and you’ll start your trip on the right foot. Welcome to Pattaya, and enjoy your stay!
