Pattaya: Built on the Strength and Evolution of Thai Women

29 June 2025By Shaneruddle

After 20 years of running businesses in Pattaya—from car rentals to restaurants, real estate, advertising, and tech—I’ve worked with hundreds of people. Some great, some average, and a few I’d rather forget. But if there’s one thing that’s become clear over time, it’s this:

Thai women consistently stand out.

They’re not just hardworking—they’re reliable, adaptable, and often the ones quietly holding entire operations together. That’s not a criticism of Thai men. I’ve got some very solid Thai guys on my teams right now—loyal, skilled, and committed. But if we’re talking patterns, it’s usually the women who rise to the top.

Pattaya’s Hidden Story

When people think of Pattaya, they picture beachfront condos, nightlife, and tourist-packed streets. But beneath that surface is a very different story—one of people who moved here chasing opportunity, often with nothing more than hope and a willingness to work hard.

A large number of them are women from small towns and farming villages across Thailand. Many arrived without higher education or much money, but they had drive. They started at the bottom and climbed their way up—slowly, steadily, and on their own terms.

Some now support entire families back home. Others have built real careers. And all of them have helped shape the Pattaya we know today.

Learning by Doing, Growing by Choice

What impresses me most is their mindset. These women don’t expect handouts. They learn by doing. Over time, they pick up English, understand Western business expectations, and become comfortable dealing with international clients.

They don't just survive in Pattaya—they grow with it. That’s why so many of them now work as:

  • Real estate agents
  • Hotel managers
  • Restaurant leaders
  • Tour guides
  • Office coordinators

They didn't go to school for it. They just showed up, listened, learned, and improved. And they keep improving.

Real Estate: A Career Path That Rewards Grit

Take real estate. Pattaya’s property market has exploded in the past 10–15 years, and with it came a flood of opportunity.

Many of our best agents are Thai women. They’re strong communicators, great with clients, and know how to manage the highs and lows of the market. Most started out answering phones or showing rental units. Now they’re closing high-value sales and managing their own client portfolios.

They understand what foreign buyers need. More importantly, they take their work seriously—which in this business, makes all the difference.

Hospitality: More Than Just Smiling Faces

The same trend is clear in hospitality.

Women who used to clear tables or work the breakfast buffet now run entire restaurants and hotels. These are not lucky breaks—they earned those roles by learning from international customers, fixing their weaknesses, and stepping up when the opportunity came.

They’re patient. They’re organised. They’re good under pressure. And in this industry, that’s gold.

Why I Hire More Women Now

This pattern has changed the way I hire.

Over time, I’ve found that Thai women tend to be more consistent, more accountable, and more focused on improvement. That doesn’t mean I don’t value the men I work with—some of them are outstanding and have been with me for years.

But generally speaking, it’s the women who shine through. They show up early, they follow through, and they rarely complain. In a town where staffing can be one of the biggest headaches, that level of commitment is rare—and deeply appreciated.

A Shift in Attitude

Work means more to people in Pattaya than it did 20 years ago. That’s true across the board. But among women especially, there’s a noticeable shift toward long-term thinking.

It’s no longer just about making quick money in a tourist town. It’s about building something meaningful—a stable income, a better life, and a future.

And if you ask me, that change is one of the best things to happen to Pattaya in years.

Final Thoughts

I’m not trying to compare or diminish anyone. I’ve worked with great men and women alike, and I value every person on my team who gives 100%. But I also believe in calling things like I see them.

Pattaya works because of its women.
They’re the ones in the background, keeping things steady. The ones who’ve grown with the city. The ones who don’t just fill jobs—they build careers, look after families, and push the city forward without needing recognition.

So next time you’re doing business here—or even just enjoying a good meal, closing a condo purchase in Wongamat, or checking into a hotel—take a second to appreciate the woman behind the counter, behind the desk, or behind the success.

Chances are, she’s the reason it’s all going smoothly.
